Although there are no official public holidays in February, Chinese New Year is celebrated
widely in Cambodia. Celebrations start on 15th of February with the 16th being the official Chinese New Year’s Day, seeing in the Year of the Dog. Celebrations continue until the 18th.

The social calendar in Siem Reap is dominated by two events this February:
Valentine’s Day and the aforementioned holiday, Chinese New Year.

February 2: Book presentation of “The Royal House of Cambodia”, by Julio A. Jeldres

Intrigued by Cambodia’s Royal family? Ambassador Jeldres, King Norodom Sihanouk’s personal secretary for two decades, will present the new and updated version of his definitive reference book ‘The Royal House of Cambodia’. Signed copies will be available to purchase on the night.

February 4: Khmer Traditional Dancing at Siem Reap Food Co-op

Coconut, Monkey, Apsara, Blessing and Fishing dances will all be performed by the talented Butterfly Centre children. All proceeds support the work of the Butterfly Educational Center, allowing the children to further their love of performing arts. The Butterfly Children are taught an array of exciting and interesting activities including performing arts, computer skills, sewing, traditional dancing and English. Cost: $5 (free for children under 10 years old)

February 5-8: Workshop on Sustainability and Tourism Management at Archaeological and Heritage Sites

We recently mentioned this four-day workshop, jointly organised by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for Archaeology and Fine Arts (SEAMEO SPAFA) and the Apsara National Authority, in our magazine. Although registration is now closed for this event, it serves as a reminder of the importance  promoting responsible tourism. Attendees will engage in seminars and talks by archaeology and heritage tourism professionals from, or working in, South East Asia, with the aim of promoting responsible tourism, share and encourage best practices that minimise damage to such sites and to provide a great tourism experience to visitors.

February 9: Comedy Night at Footprints Cafe

Comedy Night at Footprints Cafe

In partnership with Next Steps, Siem Reap’s centre dedicated to developing young Khmer soccer players, Footprints Cafe is hosting its second open mic stand up comedy night. Join them for a fantastic evening of laughs or, if you’re feeling brave, earn free drinks by taking to the stage.

February 14: Rethinking orphanages – a global movement

As part of Ayana Journey’s free and eye opening series of talks called Wisdom Wednesdays, child rights and child protection consultant Leigh Mathews will be the guest speaker. Leigh will be outlining the concept behind the ReThink Orphanages campaign. You can find out more about this campaign on their Facebook page.

February 14: Celebrate your Love Valentine’s Day

February 24 (CANCELLED): Giant Puppet Parade

Unfortunately, the 2018 edition of the Giant Puppet Parade is cancelled.

The Giant Puppet Parade is a Cambodian children’s community art project which culminates in Siem Reap’s annual puppet parade and it is now entering its twelfth year. Enjoy seeing the city’s streets ablaze with colourful costumes and high energy and enthusiasm from hundreds of participating children, accompanied by music. Aimed at fostering and promoting expression and self-confidence through art, the project runs workshops for children, firing their imagination as they create their costumes for the parade.
