Clean Green Cambodia Event - September 2019

On the 19th of September 2019, Clean Green Cambodia co-hosted with Navutu Dreams Resort the conference #noplasticinmyhotel. This event gathered 80 participants coming from the tourism industry, including 35 hotels intending to reduce their plastic use.

The event aimed to encourage hotels to reduce their plastic waste by showing that it makes environmental, social and economic sense. On the last point, the Cambodian Hotel Association already reported in 2015 that poor sanitation including poor waste management was responsible for USD 74 million of foregone tourist revenues per year. Guests are also increasingly reporting their concerns regarding plastic use in hotels on social media such as TripAdvisor.

Clean Green Cambodia showed that reducing plastic use is not expensive, and can actually reduce costs by switching to refillable shampoo, shower gel, putting bathroom amenities at the reception instead of in the room, or swapping to reusable laundry bags. The Global Green Growth Institute Cambodia, an intra-governmental organization, also presented additional steps that hotels can take to be more environmentally friendly such as reducing water and energy consumption.

Clean Green Cambodia invited as well 12 partners and suppliers to present their products that can help hotels reduce their plastic use. These suppliers included Naga Earth, Sonas, Sunsai Nature, Sra Thnam, Tea House Supplier, Rehash Trash, Plastic Free Southeast Asia, GAEA, Only One Planet Cambodia, ATS Cambodia, Kdeung Cafe, and KAMBIO Nature.

The event concluded with a networking drink and (vegetarian) snack offered by Navutu Dreams Resort. 8 Hotels also joined in to sign the #noplasticinmyhotel pledge, which adds to the already 15 hotels across Cambodia that have committed to reduce their plastic use.
